Holding a B.Sc in Urban Design and a M.Sc in Urban Planning from the Faculty of Architecture – University of Lisbon in coordination with the University of Tokyo, Sidel has also enrolled the Socrates Erasmus program at the Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy, as part of his academic education. Throughout his studies, Sidel participated on several international workshops, including “Cars and Transportation in 2050” by IPoS (Intensive Program on Sustainability) in Yokohama, Japan, as well as “The Urban Regeneration in Shanghai Through Urban Settlement ” hosted by Tongji University, China.
Sidel is a Principal Urban Planner with over 11 years of professional experience in Urban Design and Master Planning, currently based at RAKGov, United Arab Emirates.
Over the past decade, Sidel has gained an extensive urban design and master planning experience, both in the UK and the United Arab Emirates, where he has been actively involved on a range of international development projects. These have included development planning and regulations, structure frameworks, regional policies and spatial strategies, zoning and land use planning, tourism led projects, urban regeneration of town centres, waterfront and local development frameworks.
Since joining RAKGov, Sidel has contributed his expertise to a variety of planning policies and urban development projects, including the RAK Urban Structure Framework 2035, RAK Planning Standards and Guidelines, RAK Town Planning Manual and several Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme master planning projects.
Prior to joining the public sector, Sidel worked at AECOM Abu Dhabi (Design + Planning), Halcrow International in Dubai and Halcrow Limited Group in London – UK, as well as Broadway Malyan in Lisbon, where he acquired a multidisciplinary professional experience and accomplished a wide international planning proficiency and understanding. Key projects include Dubai 2020 Urban Master Plan, Yas Island Zone K Detailed Master Plan, Najmat Abu Dhabi Master Plan and Dubai Creek Urban Revitalization Development.
Areas of interest
Sidel is mainly interested in urban governance, sustainable urban development, smart city, green building and innovative urban design solutions to respond to challenging urban matters.
Personally, Sidel is interested in volleyball, having played for 7 years at the base categories of Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Portugal, from juvenile to senior level. During his time at Benfica he won several tournaments and accomplished the U-15 Portuguese national championship while playing at the juvenile category.
Being a lover of sports and nature, Sidel started mountaineering in 2011 when he first climbed Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, Malaysia. On a later stage, he climbed other mountains around the world such as Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Salkantay Mountain and Machu Picchu in Peru.
Nowdays Sidel focuses on Les Mills fitness for a healthier work-life balance.
